Interview With Personal Trainer: Roos Malmberg
It’s time to get to know some of our trainers a little better!
Today we had the pleasure to have a talk with Roos, a young ambitious Personal Trainer from the Netherlands who is working in the area of Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Hey Roos, good to speak with you. We were wondering; when did you start and why did you start as a Personal trainer?
I started with doing sports when I was really young. When I was thirteen I had a bad accident on the tennis court and I injured my shoulder. This was the start of a long and hard period: I injured the same shoulder over 30 times again and I saw sports doctor after sports doctor.
I wanted to know how my body was working and I started asking question to these doctors. By doing this, I discovered a lot about the human body. However, I still wanted to know more about the human body and that is why I started the study of Human Movement Sciences and later on started working in the fitness industry as a fitness trainer. After finishing my studies, I got attracted more and more into entrepreneurship and I started to work for my own as a freelance trainer. With my company, Inside Out, I want to show and experience people that you can reach every goal, but that the biggest chance comes from within.
What is the biggest advantage of having a Personal Trainer according to you?
I see people working so hard to reach their fitness goals but a lot of times these people are working in a way that is not aligned with the goal they want to reach. A personal trainer is important because (s)he helps making your effort worth it and to set goals that are able to reach.
But a good Personal Trainer is more than that: (s)he motivates you in a way that works to get out the most of you. A good Personal Trainer is also working on the mental aspect. When someone wants to lose weight, but they don’t really believe in reaching this themselves, then it’s our job to work on this way of thinking as well during training sessions.
What is the most beautiful moment that you have experienced as a trainer?
The most beautiful moment – oeuff – there were a lot. Last year I helped a woman who had heard from her sports doctor that she had to move as few as possible. As a consequence, she did not move her knee for years and this one was kind of rusted after all those years. She could barely do anything: no stairs, no walks outside… in fact she was actually already preparing for her death. During the period, I saw her transforming to a strong woman who could move free through life again. She is living to the fullest again and enjoys every day. I feel so grateful that I was able to help during the process and to see her live happily again.
In what ways are you a flexible trainer?
I lost my flexibility a little bit – when I was a young girl I was way more flexible. However, I think that I am still very flexible in the way I deal with my clients. I look into their needs and I try to adapt my training in a way that fits their situation and personality. Furthermore, I try to think with them about their (work) schedules and times to find a training time that is good for both of us.
How do you think that Sportacy improves the market for Personal Training and Sports?
At the moment, most of the people find and go to a Personal Trainer ‘via-via’, indirectly. Thus, they ask around to family and friends and by doing this they find their Personal Trainer. That is in fact a good thing, however I think that by finding a trainer this way clients do not always find the trainer who fits them most. With Sportacy there will be more transparency n the market and the client can choose the Personal Trainer who fits most with their fitness goals and mindset.
Do you have anything to say to people who want to make progress with their sport?
Try to listen to your body. That does not mean to get down on the couch with unhealthy snacks, but it means that you have to take it ease when you notice that your body is exhausted after a long working day. By listening to your body you will see that you will reach the most results in the long term. In the end, it is all about a combination of doing sports in a smart way, eating healthy and in a biological way, having a good recovery and having a good mindset. This is for me the formule to success.
We thank you a lot for your time and interesting words, Roos. We wish you all the luck with your trainings in the future!
